NATIV SHORTS 2024 Calls on content creatives to envision ‘The African Content Creator in 2050’

A call goes out to African creators hailing from all 45 nations, beckoning them to participate in NATIV SHORTS 2024. Their task: crafting a succinct 60-second piece of content, scripted or unscripted, accompanied by 25 evocative photographs. These works should serve as a canvas to depict “their Africa” and envision “The African Content Creative in 2050”. 

 

At the heart of their creations lies the theme of FAMILY, FOOD, FLAVOUR, open to interpretation according to their unique perspectives from the urban to the rural, a small to a large community.

Each film should not only celebrate their cultural heritage but also subtly integrate a piece of NATIV merchandise, showcasing it creatively within the narrative. Furthermore, participants are challenged to infuse their films with captivating video graphics, special effects, and animation, showcasing their technical prowess alongside their storytelling abilities.

WHAT IT MEANS FOR

Documentary, Promo, TV commercial, branded content, YouTube creatives with experience working with local and or international clients are especially invited to apply.

ELIGIBILITY

The requirements to apply are:
  • 1. You should have a “good eye” for strong narratives and images, using visuals and sound to tell the story.
  • 2. Be a citizen and a permanent resident of one of the African countries listed for this application and hold an African Nationality with valid passport.
  • 3. Have your own equipment (or easy access to equipment) and a track record as a content maker in documentaries and short promos. This means that we require that you have released* at least one production either internationally or locally. This can also be a short film.
  • By release we mean your film has had at least on of the following:
  • Theatrical release, a screening in a national or international festival, TV broadcast, digital third-party broadcast, streaming/VOD. 
  • Remember – You can shoot and submit your films even from your smart phone.

YOUR  FINAL SHORT FILM AFTER MENTORSHIP

 

A unique 60 second video and 25 photos to submit for the prizes.The video can be shot and cut on any equipment and in any style. It will be about you as a creative in Africa, your work, your fellow local creative community and your passion.

How to apply?

The application form (in English) and all supporting LINKS are available here on this website.Make sure that you register with us and then apply.
(Step 1 and Step 2).
 Your application  must be complete, and you have read all supporting materials.If you do not register or submit fraudulent or incomplete application, it will be voided.

  • If you have signed up please register as well so we have you back-up on our system for safety.

After applying, what happens next?

After the deadline, we will need around four to six weeks to evaluate the applications. If you made it on the shortlist, you will be asked to submit a treatment and storyboard  (of 2 pages max) for your 60 second film and 25 photographs you will produce in line with the theme FOOD, FAMILY, FLAVOUR.

The shortlist of 12 films then goes to an independent jury, which selects 2 projects from each country that will compete for the $3500* of prizes and funds.

For each country, we put together a jury of international film and media professionals.

We will inform the 12 selected via email.

What are the eligibility requirements

  1. You must be a citizen and a permanent resident of the country for which the call for application is open. 
  2. Have a track record as a visual storyteller / filmmaker. This means that we require that you have released at least one fictional, documentary or experimental production either internationally or locally in your country (e.g., theatrical release, tv release or screening in a national or international festival, TV broadcast, digital third-party broadcast, streaming/VOD). This can also be a short film.

I live outside my country of residence, can I still apply?

If you are currently a student or work outside of your country of  residence of one of the applicable countries,  you can still apply as long as you are in your home country for the production process. 

What is are the pizes and the money for?

The prizes and funds are up to $3500* – part of this is funds, part of this is equipment and part is work experience with international executives in media. They are to be used to further your career. 

How will I know you have received my application?

  1. We will inform you by email if the jury has selected you based on your  30 second film and photo submissions made when you applied.
  2. We will let you know as soon as the decision has been made.
  3. Please note that this will be approximately two months after the application deadline has expired. [email protected]

When will I know I have been selected?

You will receive an email to confirm we got your application.

Before you make your 60 second film it will be developed with your mentor so that it can be at the best quality for the competition.  This includes developing the concept of the film, writing a treatment and shooting plan, and review of post production. 

Development activities are funded by Nativ at no cost to the participant. Filming and editing cost are for the participant to cover up until submission of their 1 minute film and photographs.

If you are selected, you will be paired with an international mentor that will guide you through the pre and post production process of your project.

You will be sent a confirmation saying that we have received your application and that your submission is complete. Please do not contact our office to confirm your application.  If you didn’t receive a confirmation e-mail please check your spam folder.
